Dominating the skyline of Puerto Madryn, the Rayentray Hotel is the “only 5 star hotel” that is on offer and, on paper, promises a lot. Completed in 2008 to a fanfare of fireworks, the hotel has never really gotten off the ground with the pool, spa and one or two other things to be built. The rooms themselves are nice enough and offer good views out to the bay but, for service, food and ambience, the nearby Territorio is leagues ahead.

What strikes initially when staying in the Rayentray Hotel is the opulence of it all. Driving up to the building you are impressed by the size of it, 170 rooms all with sea views, dominating the skyline of Puerto Madryn. Similarly, as you walk into the entrance hall, the sheer scale of the project strikes you; it is like walking into a hotel in Las Vegas. The rooms are similarly impressive with only the best materials and a contemporary feel to everything. From each of the rooms the view out to the bay beyond is exceptional!

Unfortunately, for us, this is where the praise stops. At many points along this journey in, if you look closely, there have been numerous things that have been overlooked. The entrance hall only has seating for a hundred or so, rather than the 350 or so needed in high season. The facilities too have been left to one side, so much so that the hotel is still constructing the pool and spa facilities. Finally, where the rooms are a good size, they have crammed the loo and bath facilities into a small cubicle. Added up we are still not sure if they warrant their 5 star rating.

Great views, good quality materials, good restaurant
