Review

As far as hosterias (lodges) go, this little property ticks most boxes with a high boutique appeal. A former National parks administration office built in 1927 and one of the first in town, the house is listed as a national heritage building and has been running as a B&B since 1997. The lodge is a family run affair so it prides itself on personalised service and making guests feel at home from the start.

Location

Just a couple of blocks from the peaceful Lake Lacar’s shore beach, the small bus terminal and just six blocks from San Martin Street where all the shops, bars and restaurants are found. For guests looking to stay during the ski season, the property is definitely worth considering as it is just a 20-minute drive to Cerro Chapelco, a very well equipped ski resort in the Lake District. To appreciate your surroundings whilst staying in San Martin de los Andes you want to be spending 2 nights here…a common complaint is not having an extra day here and depending on how lively you’d like your surroundings to be, this resort town could be a better alternative to Bariloche. Another good reason to pick San Martin de los Andes over Bariloche, is the varied gourmet food options available in the town’s buzzing restaurants, which always seem busy. You don’t want to miss out on local specialities such as trout or venison when dining out here!

Rooms

Each of the 9 rooms is decorated in a different colour scheme and been furnished in a rustic country style with wrought iron beds and antiques which would not look odd in a museum. There is a family room on split-levels with a single bed suitable for a child on the ground level and the upstairs room with a double bed. It is definitely worth upgrading to a Superior room here and have a slightly bit more square footage and a bigger mattress; otherwise there isn't much of a difference between the two room categories. The only thing that could do with a bit of an improvement are the bathrooms which look a little dated but we liked finding bath salts in the amenity kit provided although this does not make up for outdated bathrooms!

Layout

All the rooms are spread out on an H layout on the ground floor, which facilitates access for guests with mobility issues. The entire house is built of rauli wood, a very rare building material nowadays and is painted in a deep shade of blue which makes it stand out from all the other chalet style structures in the vicinity. There are beautiful gardens all around the house and a medium sized heated pool.

Features

As far as food at the hotel goes, we like their breakfasts, which can be tailored upon request e.g. for sports people. Otherwise, you can expect homemade breads, pastries and freshly squeezed fruit juices. A lunch service is also available during high seasons during the winter and summer seasons. The property features a Tearoom in a lovely conservatory which is open to the public (reservations needed). The library offers a welcoming sitting room with big armchairs by a big fireplace. The reception area also is split into 2 communal lounge areas with sofas and coffee tables one with a large TV, perfect for kids. Children are most definitely welcome.
