Walking: Tierra del Fuego

This remote and scenic area offers plenty of interesting and varied walking for the moderate to intermediate

Often used only as a thoroughfare on the way through to the Antarctic, Ushuaia actually has a lot to offer, from skiing the Andes range to the north, to the great nature and walking to be experienced all around. Located right on the Beagle channel, the town sits snuggly into the stunning and raw wilderness that surrounds it on all sides. Not overly strenuous, the walking here is a really delight for all levels.

This may not be an area that competes with El Chalten in the number of the walks available, but is certainly competes as far as the variety and diversity of the walks that it offers. To start with, the beautiful Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego, is sits just to the west of the town and skirts the Beagle Channel as it heads west. This park has some of the oldest, indigenous forest in the region and, with otters and sea life using the small bays and inlets, the walking is gentle but very interesting.

Due north of the town, it is possible to go and see the Martial Glacier which, again, is not an overly taxing walk, is very different and provides some of the best views back to the town and channel of the area.

Finally, for those that feel the need for different activities in the day, there is also the possibility to combine walking along with kayaking across, as the Yamanas once did through this outstanding area.

We are big fans of the area and would certainly recommend a few days in this area to explore and get your fill for the many activities and adventures to be had.
