Walking: The Peninsula Valdes

A fascinating region to spend a few hours walking along the coast and discovering nature

Most of the Valdes Peninsula is privately owned land and so there are plenty of opportunities for walking, both down along the beaches and also inland. Some of the estancias offer limited walking trails but, in particular the Estancia Rincon Chico, it is possible to find something a bit more challenging and which take in the main sights and sounds that this marine park has to offer.

If you are after something a little more leisurely or even a little more taxing, the Valdes Peninsula will certainly offer something. The spit of land is actually surprisingly large and, to drive from the north to the south can take anything around 2 hours. With the undulating hills and relatively open environment, it can prove to be fairly taxing for even those who regularly walk.

On the whole, the main walking trails of interest will head out from the estancias and head to the shore side where it is possible to come up close and personal with the many sea lions and elephant seals that use the peninsular as a breeding and resting ground.

Another interesting walk of sorts is to head south from Puerto Madryn to Punta Tombo. This is one of the largest penguin colonies in Argentina and is an interesting couple of hours, spent meandering through the breeding colony, in between its many feathery residents.
