Cuenca & the south Sierra

Cuenca & the south Sierra

Ecuador’s southern region is markedly different to the dramatic geography of the other parts of the country. The peaceful, unpopulated southern sierra offers a far more tranquil way of life. The jewel in this bucolic crown is Cuenca, Ecuador’s third largest city. Yet with a population of only 200,000, it is a world apart from Quito and Guayaquil.

Hotel AWA

Hotel Awa is an architectural marvel with breathtaking view of the Osorno volcano from its secluded position on the shoreline of Lake Llanquihue. After 2 ½ years of construction, Awa opened its doors in November 2016 and has become the place to stay for those looking to treat themselves whilst staying in this part of Chile’s Lake district.

Hotel Charming

The Hotel Charming is a simple base for those wanting to stay outside of the bustle of Bariloche but still be able to go into town in the evenings. With a friendly and relaxed atmosphere and rooms that can be connected to create self-contained apartments, it’s a great option for families and groups of friends as well.

Estancia Huechahue

A family-owned estancia in Northern Patagonia, Estancia Huechahue is set in 15,000-acres of land in the foothills of the Andes. Offering a genuine insight into life on a working cattle farm and all the challenges that come with it, it has excellent riding and access to some of the best fly-fishing in the region.

Fly Fishing in Argentina

Argentina stands out as one of the best fly-fishing destinations worldwide, and for good reason. The lakes and rivers that lie in the Tierra del Fuego and up in the Lake District offer some of the best trout fishing anywhere. Combined with superb accommodation, excellent cuisine, expert guiding and outstanding scenery it is little wonder that fishermen and women keep coming back. For those less inclined to fish, many of the lodges also feature activities such as riding and walking.

Tierra del Fuego

Another of the world’s top fishing locations, the Rio Grande in the very south of Argentina is a renowned haunt for those that are keen on their fishing and looking for the best there is. To head to this area of Argentina is to rub shoulders with some of the wealthiest in the world and it is, accordingly, not cheap….but the fishing is like nowhere else and the fish, due to their Atlantic forays, some of the largest anywhere.

Bariloche and the Lake District

Probably the most famous area of Argentina for river trout fishing (Brown, Rainbow and Brook Trout all occur in the rivers and lakes of the region), Bariloche is where most head to for a little fishing time. Many of the more interesting fishing lodges are located around and hour or two to the north of the town, in the environs of Junin de los Andes, where the rivers that flow out of the many lakes meander their way inland.

Tipiliuke Lodge

Still working as a cattle Estancia, Tipiliuke Lodge is a true home away from home. Nestling in a forest to the north of St Martin, this private getaway offers five star treatment in a relaxed and cosy atmosphere.

Los Cauquenes Resort & Spa

Located at around 5 minutes drive out of the town, Los Cauquenes Resort & Spa is one of two fantastic hotels in the area. Designed along the lines of a ski chalet, using plenty of warm yellow Lenga wood in its construction, the hotel offers a great variety of food, activities and overall luxury.

Estancia Peuma Hue

Set at the end of the Gutierrez Lake, around 30 minutes drive from Bariloche, Estancia Peuma Hue is an idyllic getaway. The series of buildings and cabins that make up this private and secluded enclave are all built from local wood and have superb views out onto the lake beyond, providing a warm and inviting environment.
